Do to like your job? Do you give your best? Do you get there on time? As believers, we should do our best in the jobs we have. Whether we like it or not we should strive to make our boss successful. If we read the story of Joseph in Genesis 39:1-6, it is the time where Joseph had been sold into slavery and is now a servant in the house of Potiphar. I am sure Joseph was not thrilled to be a slave, yet he gave his best. God blessed Joseph in all that he did. Potiphar saw Joseph’s dedication and saw the Lord’s hand on Joseph’s life.
While I do not support or condone slavery of any kind, Paul’s conversation in Colossians and Ephesians about slaves and their actions toward their masters mirrors our relationship with our bosses.
“Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything you do. Try to please them all the time, not just when they are watching you. Serve them sincerely because of your reverent fear of the Lord. Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.” (Colossians 3:22-23)
“Slaves, obey your earthly masters with deep respect and fear. Serve them sincerely as you would serve Christ. Try to please them all the time, not just when they are watching you. As slaves of Christ, do the will of God with all your heart. Work with enthusiasm, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. Remember that the Lord will reward each one of us for the good we do, whether we are slaves or free.” (Ephesians 6:5-8)
Whether we are like Joseph (not thrilled about our employment situation) or love our work, ultimately, we are not working to please the boss. God is our ultimate authority. We do our best to please the Lord.
So in your prayer time today, pray that the Lord will give you the joy to work for Him. Strive to do your best, because it is pleasing to the Lord.
