Miracles of Jesus

Catching Fish

November 4, 2020

Have you ever experienced a time when God called you to step out on faith when things seem to be going all wrong?

When God calls us to trust him in obedience, His plan is always better even though we have tried ourselves. He knows what is going to happen.

The first miracle we look at is in Luke 5: 1-7,
“One day as Jesus was preaching on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, great crowds pressed in on him to listen to the word of God. He noticed two empty boats at the water’s edge, for the fishermen had left them and were washing their nets. Stepping into one of the boats, Jesus asked Simon, its owner, to push it out into the water. So he sat in the boat and taught the crowds from there. When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Now go out where it is deeper, and let down your nets to catch some fish.”
“Master,” Simon replied, “we worked hard all last night and didn’t catch a thing. But if you say so, I’ll let the nets down again.” And this time their nets were so full of fish they began to tear! A shout for help brought their partners in the other boat, and soon both boats were filled with fish and on the verge of sinking.”
(NLT)

The second is in John 21:1-6,
“Later, Jesus appeared again to the disciples beside the Sea of Galilee.[a] This is how it happened. Several of the disciples were there—Simon Peter, Thomas (nicknamed the Twin), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples.

Simon Peter said, “I’m going fishing.”

“We’ll come, too,” they all said. So they went out in the boat, but they caught nothing all night.

At dawn Jesus was standing on the beach, but the disciples couldn’t see who he was. He called out, “Fellows, have you caught any fish?”

“No,” they replied.

Then he said, “Throw out your net on the right-hand side of the boat, and you’ll get some!” So they did, and they couldn’t haul in the net because there were so many fish in it. (NLT)

In both instances, the disciples had fished all night with no success. In our lives, sometimes we work hard with no results.

Then Jesus tells them to try again.

They do, and He blesses them.

Sometimes God tells us to do something, and we have a conversation with the Lord, “telling” Him that it won’t work, but we finally obey and do what He says.

Obedience.

God wants our obedience.

Obedience shows our willingness to trust God and take Him at His Word.
Are you willing to obey God, not knowing what will happen on the other side?

“Lord, help me to obey you in all that I do. I want to do your will to show your glory in Jesus’ Name, Amen.”
