Knowing God

David: God is King

May 12, 2021

We can see the hand of God all over the life of King David. While there are numerous events in David’s life that we see God working, let’s look at three of them.

God can slay our giants.

We all know the story of David and Goliath.

When David went out to meet Goliath, God had already rescued David from a bear and lion. David knew that God could do the same with Goliath.

“But David persisted. “I have been taking care of my father’s sheep and goats,” he said. “When a lion or a bear comes to steal a lamb from the flock, I go after it with a club and rescue the lamb from its mouth. If the animal turns on me, I catch it by the jaw and club it to death. I have done this to both lions and bears, and I’ll do it to this pagan Philistine, too, for he has defied the armies of the living God! The Lord who rescued me from the claws of the lion and the bear will rescue me from this Philistine!” 1 Samuel 17:34-37 NLT

See how David declares the power and greatness of the Lord Almighty?

“David replied to the Philistine, “You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies—the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. Today the Lord will conquer you, and I will kill you and cut off your head. And then I will give the dead bodies of your men to the birds and wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel!” 1 Samuel 17:45-46 NLT

God rewards faithfulness

David wanted to build a house for the Lord. While this was a way that David wanted to honor His Lord, God would not allow David to fulfill this dream.

This is what God told David,

“Now go and say to my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies has declared: I took you from tending sheep in the pasture and selected you to be the leader of my people Israel. I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have destroyed all your enemies before your eyes. Now I will make your name as famous as anyone who has ever lived on the earth!” 2 Samuel 7:8-9 NLT

And

“Your house and your kingdom will continue before me for all time, and your throne will be secure forever.”

2 Samuel 7:16 NLT

God rewarded David for his trust in Him.

God wants us to trust totally in Him, not to get a reward, but because He is God.

God gives consequences for the sins we commit.

David and Bathsheba. We know the story David becomes an adulterator and a murder. He sinned against God. Because of that, David would have to live with the consequences of his actions.

“Why, then, have you despised the word of the Lord and done this horrible deed? For you have murdered Uriah the Hittite with the sword of the Ammonites and stolen his wife. From this time on, your family will live by the sword because you have despised me by taking Uriah’s wife to be your own. This is what the Lord says: Because of what you have done, I will cause your own household to rebel against you. I will give your wives to another man before your very eyes, and he will go to bed with them in public view. You did it secretly, but I will make this happen to you openly in the sight of all Israel.” 2 Samuel 12:9-12 NLT

God has a moral law. These are His standards by which we strive to live by but fall short many times. David disobeyed God’s commandments.

God forgave David, yet there were still consequences to face.

We see that David leads a very interesting and dramatic life. We see a greater person in the story! God! Can you identify how God has worked in your life, similar to David’s?

I would love to hear about it. Leave a comment below!
