“When Abram was ninety-nine years old the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless, that I may make my covenant between me and you, and may multiply you greatly.” Then Abram fell on his face. And God said to him, “Behold, my covenant is with you, and you shall be the father of a multitude of nations.” Genesis 17:1-4 ESV
This is the first mention of El Shaddai in the Bible. It is in the context of a covenant that God made to Abram (later named Abraham). God had reminded Abram of this promise multiple times if you go back and read the previous chapters. (Genesis 12,13,15)
God was reminding Abram of His power and His ability to carry out the covenant even though, the situation seemed impossible. God can do anything. He reminded Abram of this and of the promise.
Abram had to surrender and obey God. Abram needed to trust. God called him to walk before the Lord and be blameless. “The call to be blameless is not a call to perfection but a call to radical obedience and supreme trust.” (Hemphill, 2014 )
As humans, God promises to forgive our sins. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” I John 1:9 ESV
He promises to supply our needs (Mat 6:26 & Phil 4:19)
“God works things out for good. “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” (Rom 8:28 ESV)
God made the first step in initiating a relationship with Him. He is the one who reveals Himself to us.
It is the Holy Spirit that moves in our hearts to reveal to us our sins and the need for a Savior.
Here is a part we have to face. Do we trust and obey? God has extended promises to us. Do we trust Him to obey His commands? We must be yielded and surrender to the plan, purpose, and promises of God. We must be willing to believe that He is El Shaddai. Lord God Almighty.
