Elohim: Strong Creator

April 20, 2022

Names are important. They can define us in some ways. If you are a parent, you spent time choosing the right name for your child. Something special. Something that has meaning.

In the first book of the Bible, God introduces Himself. His name. Elohim.

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:1 NLT

Elohim is a Hebrew word that denotes “God”

In the first chapter of Genesis, God reveals who He is. He is the creator. Meaning that he was there before time, space and matter. He is outside of creation. He is eternal. He is transcendent.

God made what exists now out of nothing. God did not have any raw materials to use when he created the world. There was nothing.

“The teaching that God created everything out of nothing (ex nihilo) is a critical and fundamental premise of scripture that has a profound impact on one’s worldview.” (Hemphill,2014)

In the first chapter of Genesis, we learn that God is all-powerful, all-knowing, and ever-present.

When I reflect on God’s name Elohim, I am encouraged and grateful for His power. If God can create out of nothing, He has the power to help me in my daily life. There is nothing impossible for Him.

In his prayer, the prophet Jeremiah states, “O Sovereign Lord! You made the heavens and earth by your strong hand and powerful arm. Nothing is too hard for you!” Jeremiah 32:17 NLT

As you continue to live each day (as God allows), let’s remember the Creator of everything. He is powerful enough to help in your situation and troubles. He is eternal. He is not going anywhere. He is with you now and forever.
