The Armor of God

Equipped for Battle: The Belt of Truth

March 19, 2025

When we look at Ephesians 6:10-20, Paul talks about putting on the armor of God. As we dive into each part of the armor, we must remember that Paul is speaking metaphorically.

Remember, Paul was in prison when he wrote Ephesians, so he had constant encounters with Roman soldiers with which many people, including believers, would be familiar.

“Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness.” Ephesians 6:14a

The first part of the armor is the belt of Truth.

A Roman soldier’s belt helped hold up his armor and made it more comfortable to wear. Also, it carried important things like his sword and dagger so he could grab them quickly. The belt is a valuable part of the armor. It’s like the center part that holds or anchors the rest of the armor.

Truth is essential, especially in the lives of believers.

We can find Truth in the Word of God.

In His High Priestly Prayer, Jesus asks the Father , “Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.” John 17:17 ESV

The Bible, God’s Word is the foundation for knowing the Truth. Because God is Truth, we can be confident that we know everything He wants us to know. God has proven in His Word that He is trustworthy. He can be trusted.

“Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the Truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” John 14: 6-7 ESV

We can know God as the Truth by knowing Christ as the Truth. The Bible gives us doctrine and principles by which we are to live that brings glory to God.

The Truth, just like the belt on a Roman soldier’s armor, can keep our lives in place and not fall apart. The Truth of God’s Word should transfer into our lives. We should lead lives of integrity. Our character should reflect the truths found in the Bible.

So tighten your belt of Truth. By knowing the Word of God, you will learn what is true. Satan usually sprinkles some truth with lies when he tries to tempt you. Knowing the Truth, you will be able to spot the lies that the devil throws at you.

Stay strong in the power of the Holy Spirit and stay in the Word of God.
