As Christians, we know or should know about the importance of God’s Word.
In the Old Testament, God spoke directly to His people or used other people to give His message. What God said was vital for them to hear and heed.
When God gave His commands and laws to Moses, God wanted the people to learn them and obey. Even after Moses died, God was still adamant about obeying and learning His commands.
This is what God told Joshua,
“Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the instructions Moses gave you. Do not deviate from them, turning either to the right or to the left. Then you will be successful in everything you do. Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.” Joshua 1:7-8 NLT
God told Joshua to study His instructions continually and meditate on them day and night.
When you meditate on something, it means to ponder, turn over in your mind over and over again. Meditating helps you to learn something well.
In God’s charge to Joshua, we see how God feels about His Word. God wanted Joshua to know it so well that he would be sure not to disobey what God had commanded.
As Christians, how can we obey God if we do not know His commands?
“How can a young person stay pure? By obeying your word. I have tried hard to find you—
don’t let me wander from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. I praise you, O Lord; teach me your decrees. I have recited aloud all the regulations you have given us. I have rejoiced in your laws as much as in riches. I will study your commandments and reflect on your ways. I will delight in your decrees and not forget your word.” Psalms 119:9-16 NLT
We must believe that all of scripture is true and just not parts of scripture. Many of us get into trouble when we think that God does not speak to an issue in our culture today, yet you have never actually read and studied what God has to say to us? Have you read the entire Bible at least once? Just not parts here and there?
The whole Bible is there for our instructions. Not just parts.
“All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16 NLT.
It is God’s Word for us today. When you don’t pour into it, you miss out on God’s instructions and learning about God Himself.
“The instructions of the Lord are perfect, reviving the soul. The decrees of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The commandments of the Lord are right, bringing joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are clear, giving insight for living.” Psalm 19:7-8 NLT
God’s Word is an essential part of our life as a believer.
“But Jesus told him. “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” Matthew 4:4 NLT
So as we move through the rest of the year, I encourage you to start reading through the entire Bible.
This is so important. How can you say you believe and trust God’s Word if you have not read everything God has to say? If you have read through the Bible, I encourage you to come alongside a fellow believer who has not read through the Bible and encourage them to do it.
If that means you are reading along with them or encouraging them weekly, pray how God wants you to do it.
Our world today has so many messages that do not align with God’s Word. Christians need to encourage each other to know God’s Word.

Thank you for your dedication and sharing your insights. My regret is not digging deep into the Word and God’s promises earlier in life. I pray your column will encourage others to start young.
Blessings,
Thank you!
