Miracles of Jesus

In the storm

October 14, 2020

When Jesus calmed the storm, this is one miracle that many of us are familiar. The gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke give us its account.

Let’s read the story as told by Matthew,

“Then Jesus got into the boat and started across the lake with his disciples. 24 Suddenly, a fierce storm struck the lake, with waves breaking into the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25 The disciples went and woke him up, shouting, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” 26 Jesus responded, “Why are you afraid? You have so little faith!” Then he got up and rebuked the wind and waves, and suddenly there was a great calm. 27 The disciples were amazed. “Who is this man?” they asked. “Even the winds and waves obey him!” (Matthew 8:23-27 NLT).

This was defiantly a test for the disciples. God allows test in our lives to teach us who He is and to increase our faith. Storms or trials will be part of our walk as Christians.

This account does by no means illustrate that God is sleeping while we are going through the storms of life. He is always present in our lives. He is ready to hear us when we call.

“The eyes of the Lord watch over those who do right; his ears are open to their cries for help.” Psalms 34:15 NLT

In the miracle of the storm, Jesus was with the disciples in the storm. Jesus is with us during our test or trial. In the storm, the disciple got to see the power of Jesus. In our storms, we have an opportunity to see the power of God in our lives. Just like the faith of the disciples increased, our faith can grow in our storms of life.

Every storm we pass through has a purpose. It is all for our good and God’s glory.

Romans 8:23 reminds us,

“And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.” (NLT)
