Can we trust the Bible?
Yes!
If you believe that the Bible is the word of God, then the answer has to be yes.
When we think about God, His character, one of His attributes is that He is truth. God cannot err; therefore, the Bible cannot err. To deny the inerrancy of the Bible, one must either affirm that God can err or that the Bible is not the Word of God. God is completely trustworthy. Therefore, the Bible is completely trustworthy.
Hebrews 6:18 tells us that “it is impossible for God to lie” In Titus 1:2, Paul speaks of the “God who does not lie.”
Our belief in the doctrine of Scripture should be grounded in the doctrine of God.
If you believe that God is Scripture’s author, then we should not separate the character of the divine author from the character of his divine speech.
Here is a definition of inerrancy
“the inerrancy of Scripture means that Scripture in the original manuscripts does not affirm anything that is contrary to fact. This definition focuses on the question of truthfulness and falsehood in the language of Scripture. The definition in simple terms just means that the Bible always tells the truth and that it always tell the truth concerning everything it talks about. This definition does not mean that the Bible tells us every fact there is to know about any one subject, but it affirms that what it does say about any subject is true.” (Grudem, 2020)
The doctrine of biblical inerrancy is essential because it is a matter of truth. It reflects on the character of God and is foundational to our understanding of everything the Bible teaches.
We know that God used men to write His holy Word.
The Holy Spirit moved men to write. He allowed them to use their styles, cultures, gifts, and character. He allowed them to use the results of their study and research, write of their own experiences, and express what was in their minds. Yet, at the same time, the Holy Spirit did not allow error to influence their writings.
They accurately recorded all God wanted them to say and exactly how He wanted them to say it.
To be clear, not everything in the Bible is true. There are records of people lying, like when the devil told Eve the lie in the garden. However, we can be sure that the Bible accurately records what took place.
It is vital for Christians to believe that the Bible is true. Inerrancy governs our belief in the trustworthy character of God. If Scripture is unreliable, can we offer the world a reliable gospel? How can we be sure of truth on any issue if we are suspicious of errors anywhere in the Bible?
