Jehovah Jireh: The Lord will provide

June 8, 2022

Several times, God calls Abraham to trust Him about the future. One memorable time would be this one,

“By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was in the act of offering up his only son, of whom it was said, “Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.” He considered that God was able even to raise him from the dead, from which, figuratively speaking, he did receive him back.” Hebrews 11:17-19 ESV

God called Abraham to offer the one thing that was most important to Him, his son. The one in which a nation would come. That was God’s promise.

If you remember the account, it does not say that Abraham questioned God. Abraham, in obedience, got up the next morning and started off to do what God commanded. (See Genesis 22)

And before Abraham finished with the offering of Isaac, God provided a ram.

And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son.” Genesis 22:13 ESV

It is in this situation that Abraham notes the provision of God.

“So Abraham called the name of that place, “The Lord will provide” as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.” Genesis 22:14 ESV

Often, we are not aware that God provides until we realize that we have a need. Our need magnifies the situation. We have to believe that God will provide for our needs. He has always taken care of us.

“Our circumstances never test the faithfulness or power of God; they serve only to enlarge our understanding of the character of God and His purpose in our life” (Hemphill, 2014)

Our need for God helps us to know Him better. He provides for our every need in His sovereignty, grace, and mercy.

Just like He was to Abraham, He is our Jehovah Jireh The Lord Provides
