Christmas is coming. During this season, we focus more on the birth of Christ, and rightly so. Since our focus is on Christ, let’s look at the names that characterized Him. Jesus is
called the Word.
John is the apostle that introduces this to us.
“In the beginning, the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God.
He existed in the beginning with God…..So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.” John 1:1-2, 14 NLT
He reminds us again in Revelation 19:13 “He wore a robe dipped in blood, and his title was the Word of God.” NLT
Jesus Christ is preexistent, coexistent, self-contained, and self-evident. Jesus Christ is God. This is what John tells us when He begins his writings in the book of John. Jesus is the Word. The Word created the world.
“Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation, for through him, God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can’t see— such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world. Everything was created through him and for him. He existed before anything else, and he holds all creation together.” Colossians 1:15-17 NLT
Jesus was born in a manger and lived among His creation so that He could reveal Himself to us and pay our debt of sin.
“….God the Son who. In his person as well as in his words, has the role of communicating the character of God to us of expressing the will of God for us.” (Grudem, 2020)
So as we think about Christmas and the birth of Christ, let’s remember that He is the Word. The Word is God, creator, Savior, and so much more.
“The Almighty appeared on earth as a helpless human baby, needing to be fed and changed and taught to talk like any other child. The more you think about it, the more staggering it gets. Nothing in fiction is so fantastic as this truth of the Incarnation.” -J.I. Packer
