Knowing God

Jochebed: A Sovereign God who is faithful

May 5, 2021

The sovereign hand of God directed Jochebed’s life, which impacted her people, the children of Israel.

“And Amram’s wife was named Jochebed. She also was a descendant of Levi, born among the Levites in the land of Egypt. Amram and Jochebed became the parents of Aaron, Moses, and their sister, Miriam.” Number 26:59 NLT

Jochebed lived in the land of Egypt when Israel’s population was increasing rapidly. The Pharaoh orders the mass slandering of Israelite baby boys.

God in His sovereignty knew that would happen, yet God had shown the Israelites in the lives of their patriarchs that He could be trusted.

God keep Jochebed’s baby safe for the first three months. When she put baby Moses in the basket in the Nile, she probably knew that Pharaoh’s daughter bath at that spot, and God allowed Pharaoh’s daughter to have compassion for the baby.

God even allowed it to work out that Jochebed earns money to take care of her child. God provided food for her family.

I am sure Jochebed saw God’s faithfulness in His protection of her family when they were in danger due to Pharaoh’s order.

“It was by faith that Moses’ parents hid him for three months when he was born. They saw that God had given them an unusual child, and they were not afraid to disobey the king’s command.”
Hebrews 11:23 NLT

Have you seen God work in your life as He did in the life of Jochebed?

God had a plan for Moses. He protected Moses and his family. Suppose God did not protect Moses at home during the first three months, when he was in the basket on the Nile, or when Pharaoh’s daughter found him. Moses would not have been alive to lead the Israelites out of Egypt.

God’s sovereignty, His protection. His faithfulness. We can see them in Jochebed’s life.

God has not changed.
God is sovereign over our lives. He can protect us. He is always faithful.
