As believers, we are called to love one another. Jesus told His disciples in John 13:34-35,
“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (EVS)
Loving others takes on different forms, which we can learn from Paul’s first letter to the Corinthian church in chapter 13. (See I Corinthians 13)
Often, love is expressed through the things we do. Service is what we are called to do by the Lord. As believers, we are called to help and serve one another. When you see a need, you contact that person and offer your help.
Scripture tells us to bear one another’s burdens.
“Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” Galatians 6:2 ESV. This is one way we demonstrate our love for God by loving others.
But….. Let’s flip the narrative.
How often do you accept someone’s offer of help?
I would say not very often. Lately, I have noticed that people frequently decline someone’s offer of help. They say, “No, I got it, “or I think I can handle it.” I have found that I have done it multiple times.
Often, we think or know we can get the job done ourselves. (I am not saying you did not ask for the Lord’s help.) But when someone offers a helping hand, why don’t we take the help?
Pride
Embarrassment
Fear
These are just a few reasons we don’t accept help from others.
As believers, we are called to care and help one another. What if you are the “other person”? Would you let that person love you as Christ has called them to do?
I am not speaking as someone who gets it right all the time or most of the time. However, I am trying to be open to being helped, even in the small, everyday tasks of life. If someone wants to help you, let them.
We are called to care for one another, but we must also be willing to be cared for by one another.
In 1 Thessalonians 5:11, Paul encourages the believers to keep doing the good to one another “Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.” (ESV)
So here is my challenge to you for the rest of the week. Let someone help you.
