We all have dreams and desires. Some of them feel and think that it’s God’s plan for our lives. While God does not talk to us like He did to the people in the Bible, we can know His words through it.
We have all waited on God at some point in our lives. And waiting can be challenging. When you read the Scriptures, God writes several accounts of people trying to work out God’s promises or their life on their own. We all know about Abraham, Sarah, and Hager.
We know that situation did not work out so great. Despite Abraham’s and Sarah’s plan, God, still gave them the promised son.
What about Naomi?
She decides to find Ruth a husband. She even had the man picked out for her and had a plan!
“One day Naomi said to Ruth, “My daughter, it’s time that I found a permanent home for you, so that you will be provided for. Boaz is a close relative of ours, and he’s been very kind by letting you gather grain with his young women. Tonight he will be winnowing barley at the threshing floor. Now do as I tell you—take a bath and put on perfume and dress in your nicest clothes. Then go to the threshing floor, but don’t let Boaz see you until he has finished eating and drinking. Be sure to notice where he lies down; then go and uncover his feet and lie down there. He will tell you what to do.” Ruth 3:1-4 NLT
When we read what happens, we see that Boaz was an honorable man. However, he was not the closest relative, so he wanted to do the proper thing and reach out to the nearest relative first.
Remember Rebekah?
Remember the time when the two baby’s struggled in her womb?
“The children struggled together within her, and she said, “If it is thus, why is this happening to me?” So she went to inquire of the Lord. And the Lord said to her,
“Two nations are in your womb,
and two peoples from within you shall be divided;
the one shall be stronger than the other,
the older shall serve the younger.”
Genesis 25: 22-23 ESV
Years later, Rebekah remembered that God had chosen Jacob. In Genesis 27, Rebekah plots with Jacob to deceive Isaac into giving Jacob the blessing Isaac would give to Esau.
While Jacob got the blessing, he had to flee for his life. Rebekah never got to see Jacob after that before she died.
As believers, we must truly believe that God is sovereign. His plans are accurate and perfect. Therefore, despite our actions to do our own thing or move the situation faster, God still holds the outcome.
Abraham, Sarah, Naomi, and Rebekah are only a few of the people in the Bible that did things their way. We like them; we do the same in our lives.
For me, I have to pray for the prompting of the Holy Spirit. I never want to step ahead of God, even when I think He is not working or moving too slowly. In some situations, we have to step aside and let God work!
“Nothing is a surprise to God; nothing is a setback to His plans; nothing can thwart His purposes, and nothing is beyond His control. His sovereignty is absolute. God uniquely ordains everything that happens. Sovereignty is a weighty thing to ascribe to the nature and character of God. Yet if He were not sovereign, He would not be God. The Bible is clear that God is in control of everything that happens.” Joni Eareckson Tada
