Knowing God

Mary & Martha: Time with Him

August 18, 2021

It is easy for life to draw us away from spending time with God. There can be so much to do that we can’t find the time. There is nothing wrong with doing good, but it’s not the best thing to do when it gets in the way of time with God.

Jesus wants our time
If you remember the Biblical account of Jesus visiting Mary and Martha, you see the emphases in which Jesus placed on spending time with Him and not letting distractions draw us away.

“As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught. But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.”
But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:38-42 NLT

Learning to know God is something that God wants us to do. How can we know Him if we don’t spend time with Him?

While I know the level of responsibility various at different seasons in one life, it is still essential to spend time with Him. When we do spend time with Him, try not to let distractions draw us away.

Jesus still wants your service, just not at the expense of time with Him.

Jesus wants the best over the good. At first, I am sure Martha wanted to listen to Jesus but was distracted by all of the things she had to do to make sure Jesus was served well. It was good that Martha was serving others and wanted to be a gracious hostess. It was best that Mary took the time to listen to Jesus.

God has provided His Word for us to learn and know Him. Do you take the time to learn and know about Him through His Word? This is what Jesus is telling us. Service is good, but if we have to choose service over time with Him. It is best to spend time with Him.
