Knowing God

Rahab: His Name and His grace

February 24, 2021

Whether you were in a church setting or a group, no doubt, you have heard about the working of God in the life of someone else.

Can you think back to a time where you learned about the greatness of God from someone else?

God reveals Himself to us, yet it is our choice to seek Him and know Him.

When you read the story of Rahab in the book of Joshua, we learn how God uses a prostitute who chooses faith in God after hearing about His greatness.

“Before the spies went to sleep that night, Rahab went up on the roof to talk with them. “I know the Lord has given you this land,” she told them. “We are all afraid of you. Everyone in the land is living in terror. For we have heard how the Lord made a dry path for you through the Red Sea when you left Egypt. And we know what you did to Sihon and Og, the two Amorite kings east of the Jordan River, whose people you completely destroyed. No wonder our hearts have melted in fear! No one has the courage to fight after hearing such things. For the Lord your God is the supreme God of the heavens above and the earth below.” Joshua 2:8-11 NLT

When God shows up in the life of a believer, the world can see how God works. His greatness and His power are shown.

God can use what He wills to show the world Himself. In this case, as it was in Rahab’s life and she chose to believe in God.

Not only can we see how God displays His greatness to all, we see God’s grace to all.

“For you are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus. And all who have been united with Christ in baptism have put on Christ, like putting on new clothes. There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male and female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus. And now that you belong to Christ, you are the true children of Abraham. You are his heirs, and God’s promise to Abraham belongs to you.” Galatians 3:26-29 NLT

God’s grace is given to all. God created all of us differently, yet our common issue is sin. God has extended grace and salvation to all.

Rahab was a prostitute. A sinner.

She placed her faith in God, and God accepted her faith.

“It was by faith that Rahab the prostitute was not destroyed with the people in her city who refused to obey God. For she had given a friendly welcome to the spies.” Hebrews 11:32 NLT

“Rahab the prostitute is another example. She was shown to be right with God by her actions when she hid those messengers and sent them safely away by a different road. Just as the body is dead without breath, so also faith is dead without good works.” James 2:25-26 NLT

We see the grace of God to all in John 3:16-18,
“For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him. “There is no judgment against anyone who believes in him. But anyone who does not believe in him has already been judged for not believing in God’s one and only Son.” (NLT)

The story of Rahab reveals to us a God of greatness and grace.

God shows us His power in our lives and the lives of other people. Are you paying attention to Him?

His grace is for all and to all. Just the fact that we are living and breathing is an indication of His grace to us. Have you thanked Him lately for His grace?

Father in heaven, we are humbled by your greatness and power in our lives. You show us daily your strength. Please help us to take notice of your greatness and power and express gratefulness for it. Thank you for your grace to us. We don’t deserve it, yet you still give it to us. Thank you. In the name of Jesus, our Savior. Amen”
