The book of Jonah illustrates God’s overwhelming goodness and forgiveness. When we think of Jonah, we remember him running from God. We also recall the big fish that swallowed Jonah. When the people of Nineveh repented of their sins, Jonah got mad that God did not punish them for their evil ways. God forgave and changed His mind about destroying the people of Nineveh because of their repentance.
The second time God calls him, Jonah obeys. God gives Jonah a second chance to do what he was chosen to do. When God calls us to a particular purpose, does God have to keep prompting us three and four times until we finally obey? Like Jonah, we may run from what God wants us to do but do we keep running? How long do we running knowing that God is forgiving? God is so gracious to give us another chance to obey His Word when we do not the first time. We should not take advantage of God’s goodness just because we know that we will always be forgiven. There will be consequences for our actions if we continue in a defiant rebellion of God’s calling. Therefore, we need to come to a place where we surrender our will for God’s will.
What has God called you to do that you have not done? How many times have you wavered at His promptings?
