I do not know where I heard the phrase keep short accounts with God but the meaning is that we should daily examine our relationship with God when it comes to the wrong that we have done. Then ask God to forgive us.
While this phrase is not in the Bible, it helps us to stay focus on our relationship with the Lord.
“.…and forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us” (Luke 11:4a)
We should not wait until we have a long list of sins we need God to forgive.
Even though we confessed our sins when we accepted Jesus into our hearts, that does not stop us from sinning. When we pray, we should ask God to forgive us of those sins we committed today.
I John 1:9 tells us, “But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.”(NLT)
God forgives if we humble ourselves before Him and confess our sins to Him.
Not only do we do need God to forgive us, but we also need to forgive others.
“Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.” (Ephesians 4:32; NLT)
When we pray, we should ask God to help us to forgive people who have wronged us. God has forgiven us so we should extend that same forgiveness to others. Forgiveness is all a part of learning to walk like Christ. Forgiving those who have wronged you is hard. But remember, God has offered us forgiveness before we have asked for it.
Let’s purpose today to ask God to forgive our sins.
“Lord, forgive us of our sins and help us forgive those who have wronged us.”
