Knowing God

The God of Abraham

March 3, 2021

In the life of Abraham, we see his faith.

“It was by faith that Abraham obeyed when God called him to leave home and go to another land that God would give him as his inheritance. He went without knowing where he was going. And even when he reached the land God promised him, he lived there by faith—for he was like a foreigner, living in tents. And so did Isaac and Jacob, who inherited the same promise. Abraham was confidently looking forward to a city with eternal foundations, a city designed and built by God.” Hebrews 11:8-10 NLT

Abraham did things most of us would have a hard time doing. He made mistakes along the way, but he had faith.

As we look at Abraham’s life, let’s look at the God in which he puts his faith.

God required total trust.

God told Abraham to leave his family and security and go to a place that God would show him.

“The Lord had said to Abram, “Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you.” Genesis 12:1 NLT

One would have to step out on total faith and trust in God to leave the comforts of the family to go to an unknown place. Abraham had to believe that God would be his security.

Later on, in Abraham’s life, God asked him to step out on faith again and sacrifice his only son. The promised son.

“Sometime later, God tested Abraham’s faith. “Abraham!” God called. “Yes,” he replied. “Here I am.” “Take your son, your only son—yes, Isaac, whom you love so much—and go to the land of Moriah. Go and sacrifice him as a burnt offering on one of the mountains, which I will show you.” Genesis 22:1-2 NLT

God provides
God provided a ram to Abraham so he would not have to kill Isaac, his son.

God keeps His promises
God told Abraham multiple times that He would give him land and numerous descendants.

God promised this when He first called Abraham and God keep telling Abraham what He was going to do. (See Genesis 12:1, 12;7, 13:14-17, 15, 17:1-8, 18)

Abraham waited twenty-five years for the promise of a son to be fulfilled.
“The Lord kept his word and did for Sarah exactly what he had promised. She became pregnant, and she gave birth to a son for Abraham in his old age.” Genesis 21: 1-2 NLT

God is patient and merciful
Genesis 18:16-33, God was going to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah. Yet, Abraham inquired of the Lord six times if God would spare the city of there were a certain number of righteous people there. Abraham questioned to Lord again and again. I am sure after the third time, God could have just cut Abraham off asked him “why are you questioning me? Am I not the Lord God Almighty?” But God did not do that He answered all of Abraham’s questions each the same way.

When have you continuedly ask the Lord for something? It is so good to know that He is patient with us

In each of these scenes in Abraham’s life, we see the character of God. God has promised that He never changes. God’s same character is seen in Abraham’s life we can see in our lives too.

When has God required you to trust Him? What promises has He kept? When have you seen His patience and mercy? When has He provided for you?
