True Wisdom

October 2, 2019

Often when we think of wisdom and the scriptures, we think of Solomon. He was known as the wisest man — this same wisdom God can give to us.

If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone.” (James 1:5-6;NLT)

Later on, James writes about what wisdom does and does not represent. Take a look at James 3:13-18:

If you are wise and understand God’s ways, prove it by living an honorable life, doing good works with the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you are bitterly jealous and there is selfish ambition in your heart, don’t cover up the truth with boasting and lying. For jealousy and selfishness are not God’s kind of wisdom. Such things are earthly, unspiritual, and demonic. For wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and evil of every kind. But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and the fruit of good deeds. It shows no favoritism and is always sincere. And those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of righteousness.” (NLT)

James gives us practical ways in which we can learn what wisdom looks like.

So let’s break it down. What should God’s wisdom resemble?

It is in living an honorable life: Doing right. Treating others with respect.

Showing humility: Humbling yourself. Acknowledging others. Showing gratefulness.

Doing good works: Doing good to those around us. Giving to those in need.

Loves peace: Don’t look for confrontation. Try to find common ground. Strive to work well with thers.

Willing to accommodate others: Don’t be selfish.

Be sincere: Have pure intentions. Pray for the best.

Shows mercy: Forgiving others. Giving others grace when they mess up.

James also lists other characteristics opposite wisdom.

Here is the list:

bitterness

jealousy

selfishness

boasting

favoritism

Wow! This is some pretty heavy stuff. We do not want these characteristics in our lives! This is the opposite of what we should be doing.

We need God’s help in representing wisdom. Let us be prayerful in our pursuit of godly wisdom.

Lord, please give me your wisdom. Help me to live in such a way that is honoring to you. Help me to stay humble and sincere when giving to others. Amen”
