Twice

February 26, 2020

Have you ever had to give up something in faith to God? Did you have to give up the same thing twice?

Jochebed had to do this very thing.

About this time, a man and woman from the tribe of Levi got married. The woman became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She saw that he was a special baby and kept him hidden for three months. But when she could no longer hide him, she got a basket made of papyrus reeds and waterproofed it with tar and pitch. She put the baby in the basket and laid it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile River. The baby’s sister then stood at a distance, watching to see what would happen to him.” (Genesis 2:1-4;NLT)

Jochebed knew she had a special gift from God. She was willing to put the baby’s future in the hands of God and tried a daring move to save his life. She had no idea how this plan would work, but by God’s grace, it did.

Soon, Pharaoh’s daughter came down to bathe in the river, and her attendants walked along the riverbank. When the princess saw the basket among the reeds, she sent her maid to get it for her. When the princess opened it, she saw the baby. The little boy was crying, and she felt sorry for him. “This must be one of the Hebrew children,” she said. Then the baby’s sister approached the princess. “Should I go and find one of the Hebrew women to nurse the baby for you?” she asked. “Yes, do!” the princess replied. So the girl went and called the baby’s mother. “Take this baby and nurse him for me,” the princess told the baby’s mother. “I will pay you for your help.” So the woman took her baby home and nursed him” (Genesis 2:5-9; NLT).

Because of her faithfulness, God gave Moses back to Jochebed for a time. And with pay!
Then she had to give him back to Pharaoh’s daughter. The Bible does not say precisely how long, but he was weaned from nursing.

Jochebed was willing to give one of her most cherished possessions, her son. She had such faith, to be willing to do it twice.

Jochebed did not know the plan that God had for Moses, but she knew Moses was unique. God had a purpose for his life. She was willing to give him up not once but twice!

Many of us struggle with letting go to God’s will once. It takes faith to know that God is in control of our lives and the lives of our family members.

Building our faith takes work we should:

Prayerfully ask God for help to trust Him.
Study God’s Word to understand His promises to us
Memorized His Word to record it in our minds
Meditate on His Word to sketch in on our hearts

My prayer is that no matter how many times God calls me to have faith in Him, I will always be willing.
